About Sallie Spencer

Sallie Spencer is an accomplished oil painter, who has spent years exploring different landscapes across California, the American West, and the South, in search of inspiring combinations of light, structure, and color. Her appreciation for nature, art, and architecture began at an early age when she was growing up in the midwest. Through participation in 4H and junior programs at local colleges and art guilds, Sallie developed her artistic skills across a wide variety of media.

After earning her BFA degree from Western Michigan University in 1987, Sallie took additional fine arts and industrial design classes at Purdue University. She began her professional life as a graphic designer at Indiana Design Consortium, Inc., an advertising agency in Lafayette, Indiana. In 1993, Sallie moved to Glendale, California, where she worked as a graphic designer at Electro Rent Corporation while taking night courses at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Sallie's passion for plein air painting took root when she started attending Margot Lennartz's weekly workshops in Southern California. Over the years, she has honed her skills in still-life painting under the guidance of Chris diDomizio in Marietta, Georgia. In 2016, Sallie and her family moved back to West Lafayette, Indiana, where she became a full-time oil painter, attending workshops led by Elizabeth Tolley, John Guernsey, Peggy Kroll Roberts/Ray Roberts, Ken Backhaus, and Marc Hanson. In 2020, Sallie moved back to California to be closer to the landscapes that serve as a source of inspiration for her creative works.

Sallie is a member of various artist organizations, including the California Art Club - Los Angeles Chapter, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Oil Painters of America, Verdugo Hills Art Association, and Women Artist of the West. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

Sallie Spencer's deep appreciation for nature, art, and architecture continues to be reflected in her work. She paints daily from her studio, continuing to mature as an artist, and draws much of her inspiration from the early California masters. Sallie is a dedicated artist, always seeking new ways to grow and develop her skills as she shares her talent and passion for art with others.
